Adhesive Tape - We’re Stuck On It

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Margarette Tustle Tapes People Love To Use If you were to look in any given junk drawer you would probably find at least one kind of adhesive tape such as cellophane tape or masking tape. Most people own several different kinds of tape because we use different types for different jobs. Tape as we know it has been around for decades-masking tape was invented in 1925. You may own duct tape, electrical tape, basting tape (for sewing) and even floral tape. Adhesive tape has really become a part of our every day lives. We use it for everything from repairing a book to medical procedures. So, lets take a closer look at what is old-and what is new, in the world of adhesive tape. History Although people have been using natural adhesives like beeswax for centuries, it was not until the mid-1800s that American inventor Henry Day invented the first tape-like product. In the twentieth century, with the proliferation of synthetic materials like nylon, cellophane, and other products, there are now dozens and dozens of kinds of tape used for every type of task and in nearly every aspect of our lives. A Touch Of Humor There is a bit of adhesive tape humor associated with the invention of masking tape. Auto workers were looking for something that they could mark the paint lines on cars that would not damage the paint when it was removed. A scientist named Richard Drew was charged with the responsibility to invent a tape to fill the need. He made an adhesive tape that had an adhesive that was not overly sticky, but that would hold enough to do the job. The problem was that, in order to save money, the manufacturers only put the adhesive on the two edges of the tape and not in the middle. The auto workers complained loudly about this Scotch tape in a reference to the Scottish reputed reputation for frugality. The adhesive tape soon had adhesive applied to the whole surface. Scotch Tape Richard Drew invented another very popular adhesive tape as well-cellulose tape-which is also called Scotch tape for obvious reasons. It now comes in many different styles, finishes, sizes and even colors. You can get a matte finish, which seems to disappear when applied, and glossy, you can even get some with decorative designs to spruce up packages or envelopes. It even comes in a double-sided variety with adhesive on both sides. It comes in disposable dispensers, rolls that you can put in permanent dispensers, and now, even handy dispensers which allow you to take one small piece of adhesive tape at a time. Whats Its Use? Some job specific tapes include electrical tape which is used for repairing frayed wires or taping off ends of wires. Basting tape is an adhesive tape used by seamstresses to hold a hem or a seam when they are prepping an article for sewing. Medical tape can be used instead of stitches to allow physicians to seal an incision so that they can go back in if necessary-or to hold a cut together so that it can heal. By Margarette Tustle. The Best Colleges for Earning a Degree in Social Work Fields

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Nic Haffner It has been said that the most rewarding career one can embark upon is one which serves the people. For the thousands of people who graduate each year with a degree in social work related fields they dedicate their lives to helping those who are less fortunate or need assistance in times of needs. When it comes to choosing a college to earn a degree in this field there are certain schools that stand out and truly deserve to be called the best. Whether your pursue your degree in a local community college, University or through online education there are certain criteria you are undoubtedly looking for to make sure the school you choose is the best for your field. Some of the things that you should look for when making a decision include: What type of programs do they offer in the social sciences? Are they recognized by any national or world-wide institutes or organizations that deal with public service? How have they earned accreditation in this field? No doubt as you begin your search these questions and many others are going to be part of a comprehensive list you develop to help you in choosing the appropriate educational institution. As you explore your options don’t forget to also check with local and state agencies that provide services to the public in your field to ask them if they can recommend higher education choices. Many times these organizations are thrilled to help someone who wants to pursue this type of work and can not only recommend schools but also help mentor you as you pursue your degree. Often these types of mentoring relationships can lead to full-time employment after graduation. Crabs in a Bucket - Weight Training For The Boomers

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Brad Pilon Last week, I had a couple of old friends drop in on me for dinner. As usual, it only took a little bit of time before the conversation turned to nutrition and working out. One of my friends was in his late 50s. He has always been in great shape. He maintains a great workout program and always pays attention to what he eats. Yet, on this particular visit, he seemed a little discouraged with his progress. After a little bit of prying I found out why. He had been out having dinner with several of his friends who were all medical doctors and they were on him about working out. Turns out these three highly educated individuals were trying to convince my friend that it was physically impossible to put on muscle once you pass fifty years of age. They told him that it had something to do with his hormone levels and lack of testosterone. No wonder he was discouraged! Thankfully, in no way is any of this true. There is lots of research that has been conducted on subjects over 50 years of age showing the benefit of weight training. A group of researchers at the University of Saschetchewan in Canada has been studying the effects of creatine supplementation and weight lifting in the elderly with great results. When it comes to muscle - Use it or lose it. Thats the bottom line. There is no truth to the saying that you cant build muscle over a certain age. People in their 70s can build muscle with weight training. So why would a group of medical doctors try to convince my friend that he was wasting his time working out, when research clearly shows there is benefit? The answer is crabs in a bucket. If you arent familiar with the crabs in a bucket analogy, its pretty simple. Crabbers never have to worry about crabs escaping when they are caught and thrown into a bucket. This is because if one crab starts climbing the walls of the bucket, the other crabs will pull the escaping crab back down. The crabs see it like this - if we are going to be dinner, then you are going to be dinner too. After a little more prying my friend informed me that his three medical doctor friends did not workout, were overweight (one of them was very overweight) and mostly ate fast food. Like I said, crabs in a bucket. When you are trying to live a healthy lifestyle, you are always going to go up against crabs. They do not like it when you say no to dessert, pass on just one more drink, or go work out. The reason they dont like it is because it makes them painfully aware that you are in control of an area in your life that they have no control over in there own. Ignore the crabs and remember- no matter your age, if you want to look and feel better than the average person, then you cant eat and work-out like an average person. You have to go one-step farther. Your 25th Birthday: An Important Halfway Point

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Gail Leino By the 25th birthday most people expect to have accomplished something with their lives. Theres only five more years until that big three-O and the average person usually hopes that they are well on their way by their 25th year. Theyll have settled into a place of their own, a job and may even be starting a family all ready. Some new twenty-five year olds might be thinking that they want their party to be a little more grown-up, a little more sensible around this time. Of course thats fairly normal. After all the 25th birthday is an important milestone signifying stability and foundation. Even the music channel, MTV recently celebrated its 25th year of existence in 2006. The average birthday is also considered an anniversary, this one being of the 25th year of the day you were born and the 25th anniversary is also known as the silver anniversary. Lots of silver decorations can add both elegance and an interesting theme to the birthday party. Plastic silver colored fedoras can be great party favors to give out to guests or as prizes. Other nice party favors are silver glasses and even silver beads. Silver or platinum colored cups, plates and napkins can usually be found with intricate designs in ink or embossed on them for the guests to eat off of. Traditional party birthday cakes used to have small prizes mixed into the batter for people to find. Since this is the 25th birthday party you could mix in some quarters with the batter. Do warn your guests before they start eating though. Better yet use quarters and money in general in the theme of the party. Scatter plastic play money around the buffet table and hang it from the ceiling. Party loot bags can include quarters for the guests to use. Which Country is that Cell Tower Located in Anyway?

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=L._Winslow]L. Winslow It appears that 3-G wireless has won the game as the new way that cell phones communicate. Although today there is a serious problem as many times the cell tower is in a different state or even a different country than the caller with the cell phone. This causes a huge problem as in who collects the tax revenue? Along the Canadian border there are many cell towers and they transmit calls coming from the United States, the person using a cell phone is charged a roaming charge, but it is unfair to the cell phone subscriber to receive charges for international phone call or taxes from both countries. The same problem occurs along the Mexican border of the United States where property is cheaper thus cell tower operators have put the cell tower in Mexico in order to avoid taxes and receive a faster return on investment. So far state agencies have not complained but in the future they will. Right now many state governments are experiencing a windfall in collected tax revenue from increased fuel costs, but when that ends, these states will be looking to collect money from other sources and you can bet they will want their tax revenue from money generated from cell towers no matter what country the cell tower is actually located in. Who owns the airwaves and who owns the airspace, if the signal is traveling over the ground then does that state or jurisdiction apply also to the tax revenue collected? In the future these court cases may get very large and change the way that cell phone charges come on your cell phone bill. L. If Fast Food is a Must, Make the Healthiest Possible Choices

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Mike Geary I was out recently with some friends and we stopped at a fast food joint. I hate fast food joints, but sometimes everybody else wants to go there, so you just have to make the best of it and find something at least somewhat healthy. If you’re forced to eat fast-food, here’s a tip to make sure that you’re not doing much damage to your body…ALWAYS AVOID the soda and anything deep fried including french fries, hash browns, and anything breaded like chicken nuggets, chicken patties, or breaded fish sandwiches. These are all absolutely soaked in deadly trans fats from the industrial hydrogenated vegetable oils they use to fry all of these items. Remember, as I’ve said before, I’ve seen studies indicating that as little as 1 gram of trans fat per day can have serious degenerative internal effects in your body such as inflammation, clogging and hardening of the arteries, heart disease, various forms of cancer…not to mention packing on the ab flab. That’s as little as 1 gram! Consider that a typical fast-food meal of a breaded chicken sandwich (or fish sandwich), along with an order of fries can contain as much as 10 grams of trans fat! Add on a cookie or small piece of pie for dessert (which are usually made with deadly margarine or shortening), and now you’re up to about 13 grams of trans fat with that entire meal. If 1 gram a day is slowly killing you, imagine what 13 grams is doing! And that was only one meal that you ate. Some people are consuming 20-30 grams of trans fat per day, and not even realizing what they’re doing to themselves internally. Please realize that nobody, I mean NOBODY, is looking out for your health, except for YOU. Anyway, back to the topic of how to avoid this stuff and eat a reasonably healthy meal on the rare occasion that you’re forced to eat fast-food. As for drinks, avoid the sodas…they’re nothing but heavily processed high fructose corn syrup which will surely end up as extra belly fat. Water is always the best drink, but if you need something with flavor, try unsweetened or lightly sweetened iced tea. At breakfast, the best choice is an egg, ham, and cheese on an english muffin (not on a croissant, which is full of nasty trans!), or a fruit & nut salad. At lunch or dinner, the best choices are a grilled chicken sandwich, the chili, a grilled chicken salad without croutons (again…croutons = more trans), or even just a plain cheeseburger. The main take-away point from this little fast-food article is that the nastiest stuff at these fast food joints are the sodas and fries, and any other deep fried items. For any of you that have seen the movie “Super-Size Me”, you saw how eating fast food every day absolutely destroyed that guy’s health, but did you happen to notice the one guy that was the king of eating big macs (or some kind of burger)? I don’t remember what kind of burger it was, but basically this guy has eaten these fast food burgers almost every day of his life for the past 30 years or something like that. Did you notice that he stated that he almost never eats the fries or soda, even though he eats the burgers every day? And he’s not necessarily overweight. Now I’m not saying that fast-food burgers made with their refined white bread and low quality beef and cheese are the healthiest thing, but the point is…it’s the fries and sodas that are the real health disaster. Alright, so next time you’re out at one of these places, remember these tips and choose smart! By the way, if you haven’t heard yet, McD’s is adding a nutrition label to all of their food wrappers beginning in 2006. Remember that as little as one gram of trans may cause some internal harm and now you can actually see how many grams of trans fat you’re eating right on the food wrapper. That might change your mind about finishing it! Good Relationships Result From Smart Dating

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Melani Ward Dating is sort of a lost art. It seems that many people go out on a date with a person, decide they like them and before they know it they are a “couple”. I say play the odds. Date a lot. This may seem obvious but I often speak with clients and friends who go out with someone and then get really disappointed when it fails to work. When you think about how many different types of people there are and the mental list that we keep in our heads of certain traits and characteristics we want our partner to possess, it would be pretty shocking to find that the first guy you go out with as you embark on this new dating journey is going to be the one. Dating is hard work and while you should to be open to the possibility of finding Mr. or Mrs. Right, you also have to be open to the possibility of finding Mr. or Mrs. Wrong. Dating can give you valuable information about what you want and with each person you date, you may discover something new to add to your lists of wants and dont wants. Everyone you date is leading you closer to the relationship that may take you till death do you part but you have to approach each date positively and accept the gift of clarity it gives you. I have to admit that I did not always follow this rule and unfortunately it got me into a lot of trouble. Thinking back on some of my past relationships I was never one to say that I wanted to take things slowly. I was never that girl. For me it seemed that once there was a connection with a guy and we discovered that we liked spending time with each other, we were immediately joined at the hip. Looking back I know this was not the best approach. For example, my ex-husband and I met and immediately clicked. Before we knew it we were living together. However, we were different in so many of the ways that mattered and we really never should have been together, let alone get married. But, because we were living together and got along incredibly well, it was just too easy to stay on the train. I think there are a lot of people together by default when there really are better matches for them out there they just cut themselves off too soon. Sometimes it is difficult to decipher what is really going in a relationship. Sometimes you will meet someone and you click with them and it feels good right away. Unfortunately, sometimes people confuse clicking with someone with actually knowing them. There is this immediate sense of comfort you feel with some people and it seems as though you have known them your whole life but you still know virtually nothing about them. It puts you into a false sense of understanding and can really confuse things. So, take your time when you are dating and make sure you really know the person and know what you are getting into before you shut yourself off from every other possibility out there. You may find that you are dating someone who has a lot of the qualities you want and need in a partner but that something is not quite right about it. This time, instead of continuing to date someone because you think it is a better alternative than staying home alone, remind yourself that you deserve to have exactly what you want and though continuing to date this person may provide you temporary gratification, it is taking you further away from what you want. I remind my clients about their goals and what they are hoping to accomplish through dating. Then I ask them to reflect on what they are doing and whether or not what they are doing is bringing them closer to their goal. If the answer is no, then stop doing it. Get out there and date! Let Your Kids See The World From A Different Perspective, Give Them A Microscope

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Abbie Frank There are many things you provide to your children especially at birthdays and holidays. The problem however is that much of what we give to our kids are the electronic, site and watch or listen types of gifts. These do precious little to encourage their sense of understanding, wonderment or interest in the world around them. All kids have an interest in the outside world and latent creativity. What makes things work and why are two of the strongest interests in many kids. The trick for parents is to bring out these natural interests through activities that encourage exploration and development. If your interested in helping your child to develop a well rounded interest in life [and who isn't] it’s important to expose them to new activities. We’re not talking about turning on the Travel Channel or Discovery on the television. Kids learn by hands on activities like having a microscope. Here are a few examples. Want to teach your child about the environment? Get them a microscope. Collect some trash like a banana peel and a water bottle. Leave both outside for a few weeks then go exploring. Use the microscope to see how the banana peel has decomposed at a cellular level and will return back into the environment. Now look at the plastic bottle. How about checking out something as simple as tree leaves? Using leaves as a lead in, it would make a perfect time to explain the role trees play in keeping our air clean by using carbon dioxide and creating oxygen. Use a microscope to look at water from different sources. From the kitchen sink, there’s far fewer “debris” than the gutter run off from a spring rain. This would be a perfect time to explain how thinking before pouring anything down the drain can help the environment. There are thousands of things that you can use a microscope for to encourage your childs natural curiosity and get them away from the electronic playground we’re provided for them. A microscope can get them outside, exploring their world, enjoying the air and wonderment that is our planet. Just get them started and the interest will take off. When selecting a microscope for child use, consider one that supports the ability to take pictures of the results. This will enable you to create photos of the things your kids found fascinating. The pictures make great decorations on a bedroom wall which in turn may generate even more interest in learning more about a subject. Open a real world for your childrens enjoyment and exploration. Get them a microscope. Abigail Franks writes on a variety of subjects which include family, travel, and business. The Effects of Stress

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

By D.S. Braun Stress can affect you in four different ways: The Physical Effects of Stress These result in a physically perceived overload. These are present in many forms. One of the first areas to consider is the chemical burden from our modern and affluent lifestyle. Pesticides, fertilisers, additives, sprays and other chemicals which we constantly contact initiate stress reactions within our bodies. In the excellent book “Allergy Overload”, Stephen Griffiths alerts us to the 5,000 allowable food additives; some of which we will ingest daily. Bluntly stated, they slowly poison us. The ingestion of allergenic foods is highly stressful. Most people are considered intolerant to something, the detrimental effects of tea, coffee and alcohol. In addition to being nutritionally valueless, these beverages create a direct physical stress on the internal organs responsible for detoxifying them (mainly the liver) and further unbalance our emotional state because they are stimulating drugs. There can be physical stress from over exertion as in the case of unfit people attempting stressful exercise, or athletes pushing to achieve goals well beyond the intended capacity of their bodies. Some people feel driven by a fanatical desire to exercise and often end up exhausted and totally depleted. Consider also, people who work long hours or shift-hours where the natural rhythm of bodily function and internal energy exchanges are either inhibited or thrown out of balance. The proverbial ‘workaholic’ very often suffers, primarily from physical exhaustion caused by deep - rooted psychological origins. The Emotional Effects of Stress Create tension and irritability which is very often manifested as disease and illness as ways of dealing with emotions that cannot be expressed. When a person finds themselves in a circumstance which they feel is beyond their control and with seemingly no resolve, they will often subconsciously transfer their feelings to the physical, as its form of expression. A common example here is headache, and a common cause of headache is the feeling of hopelessness that results from being locked into a particular role or circumstance. Of course, the more organic causes of headache could include eyestrain, constipation or neck problems and these areas would need to be investigated too. However, no amount of physical therapy will solve the problem if there is a strong emotional “cause” behind it. A further example of the way that we use disease would be stomach aches in children. This can be a very effective means of gaining parental attention by a child who feels that a new member of the family is getting more than their fair share of attention. Skin problems usually have an identifiable emotional basis. An irritating skin complaint can often be the result of irritating life circumstances or an irritating person that one would rather not be involved with. It might be irritation with one’s job. If such stresses are not dealt within the right way at the emotional level, they will most likely manifest as an irritating rash or similar condition until the problem is resolved. Another example is constipation. If chronic cases do not respond to the physical priorities of more water and fibre in diet, the cause may be retention in the mind for example holding on tenaciously to old ideas or relationships that no longer serve our best interests. These mental retentions can manifest as the physical retention of rubbish that we would best be well rid of. Do note at this point that a seemingly identical emotional problem may manifest as a particular physical disease in one person and yet as a completely different disease in another person. There is no hard and fast rule of “one stress, one disease”. The Mental Effects of Stress These impair logical thinking and can occur for many reasons. There may be a conflict at work or at home; worry about ones appearance or abilities or relationships, children, career or finances. Indeed anything. A problem which does not bear a second thought for one person, may be a catastrophe for another. These stresses and conflicts are very real for those who are experiencing them. In this sense, stress is highly subjective and here in lies a major key to correcting it. To change ones thinking about a problem is often enough to correct that problem. The very existence of worrying stress is confirmation that better ways of approaching and handling the situation need to be found. Stressful problems must be rectified or they will make us miserable emotionally and will very likely manifest physically. The vehicles for this physical manifestation being our nervous and endocrine systems, which form the link between thought and the physical. Suppressed emotions result in physical disease as well as mental disease. Two of the more common conditions which are easily related to stress are ulcers and hypochlorhydria. These are often the direct result of emotional and physical stress. You will recognise that these complaints result in pain and poor digestion and will eventually have an effect on every cell within our body. In recognising the stress - emotional link between the mind and the body, healing must be initiated on both levels. If stress is an identifiable component of most physical problems then every effort must be made to deal with problems emotionally as well as physically. Dietary intervention is also essential. Dietary indiscretions will be a major factor in maintaining any illness, however it may not be the main issue. If we use ulcers as an example: too only modify the diet would be to treat only half (or less) of the problem. This would not be getting at the cause which may be dissatisfaction with their job or relationship, or just an inability to cope with life as they see it. To pursue the example of ulcers a little further; we know that they are usually caused by stress. We also know that people under stress are likely to drink alcohol and coffee to try and cope with their stress. Foods that are sugary, fatty and salty are also tasty and satisfying and make a great “pick me up” when we are down or depressed. These foods are popular with ulcer sufferers. So, stress has contributed to the ulcer and has also been a major reason for our choice of inappropriate foods. This poor diet will contribute greatly to increased stress levels because of the “highs and lows” created by the drug-like effect of sugar, coffee and alcohol. The Behavioral Effects of Stress These are observable in the way we act or behave. For this it is necessary to observe what happens on a physiological level, and understand how stressful events and emotions affect us physically. We accept that the more toxic elements of our diet have a depressing effect on us. However, it appears that the emotional strains are even more debilitating. Anything which comprises our immune system is a serious threat to our health. From a purely physical point of view our body reacts the same way, no matter what the stress is. Be it an argument with your employer of flight from a wild animal; the physical response will be basically the same; only the degree of response will vary according to the intensity of the stress. The advantages of the latter example is that you are either going to be eaten by that wild animal or you will escape. Either way the stress will be resolved. It is often not possible to resolve stresses in our modern and complex framework of social interaction. Intense emotions may have to be buried with no opportunity for immediate or short term resolve. These feelings of anger, futility, resentment and hurt are left to eat away at our very core. Physical and emotional threats to our well-being are registered by the Hypothalamus in the brain. The Hypothalamus is a major control centre of the brain and initiates reactions via the Autonomic Nervous System. This system is not directly under our conscious control and can act in many ways. It can restrict blood flow or digestive secretions and inhibit the genitalia. It may act to dilate the blood vessels serving muscles involved in the “fight or flight” response. Nerves to the face can dilate pupils and tense facial muscles. Something as simple as an embarrassing word can send blood rushing to our face. An angry word at work may send blood rushing to our arms and muscles to prompt other physical changes. It is important to acknowledge that all stresses are not bad. Some stress is necessary and is a great motivator. Indeed stress reactions are very necessary for our survival. They are our body’s way of preparing for and dealing with crises. This is both necessary and healthy. What is not healthy is excessive or chronic (ongoing, long term) stress. When we are chronically stressed all of these physical reactions remain active. Everything is thrown out of balance. It is hardly conducive to the digestion if, through a stress reaction, your blood has been directed away from the digestive area and gastric secretion has been inhibited. Two examples of this would be arguing at the dinner table or maintaining intense mental activity at work whilst eating lunch. The Pituitary Gland is actually an anatomical extension of the Hypothalamus; so close is the connection between the brain and the endocrine glands. The pituitary sends our many hormones which act directly on the tissues of the body and on other endocrine glands which put out even more hormones. Pituitary hormones stimulate the thyroid which produces hormones to raise the metabolic rate during times of stress. Adrenocorticotrophic hormone, or ACTH is produced by the pituitary and carried by the blood to the adrenals. Therefore, the brain’s response to various stresses can increase the secretion of glucocoriticoide from the adrenal cortex to bring about adaptive metabolic responses in order to increase bodily resistance and survival. In conclusion, it is important to realise that however well you appear to cope with everyday life, you will experience stress to some degree. Moderate amounts are good for you, and can improve your performance, your efficiency and productivity. But too much may generate disabling emotions such as overwhelming anxiety and tension, difficulty in thinking clearly, and a wide range of behavioural responses.
