Holistic Health and Healing: A Common Sense Approach - Healing Happens Naturally

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Michael McCright It all starts with PREVENTION! All too often, we as individuals come to believe that illness, disease, sickness and injury just happen to us and that some outside source forces itself upon us. Its at that time that we decide that we must do something special to fight for our health. Sometimes it appears that whatever has happened will continue to plague us forever and perhaps it may. It all depends on how far down the disease continuum we have allowed ourselves to progress. Whoever said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure was absolutely correct and that age old axiom if Id known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself also applies. The state that our bodies are in will determine whether we will be able to be over that cold in 4 hours, 4 days or 4 weeks. It will determine how fast a broken bone will mend. A broken bone will normally mend itself in a couple of months, with most of the pain and discomfort gone within the first month. The state that our bodies are in will determine the length of recovery time after a surgery or hospital stay. Difficulties in the healing process develop when the body does not have the elements that it needs to complete the task at hand. Another way of saying it is that a person has allowed the body to fall into a state of lack. Lacking an essential vitamin, mineral, amino acid, oxygen molecule, etc. will make the body rob from Peter to pay Paul. It will take something from another part of the body that it considers less important (at the moment) and use it to fulfill critical needs. A good example is when the blood becomes too acidic and needs some calcium to neutralize the acid and get back to an alkaline state. If we have plenty of calcium available in the body, great! However, if we dont, then the body will take it from the bones (the bones make a great storage place for calcium). This is known as osteoporosis and it makes sense that it could be a factor in osteoarthritis. How and why did it happen? The answer is simple, we did not keep the body in a balanced state by providing it with the building blocks it needed for continued health. Another sad fact that becomes apparent is that we probably werent even aware that the event happened. Lets say I was going to make an outstanding chocolate cake and the recipe required the following ingredients: 2 cups white sugar 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda1 teaspoon salt2 eggs1 cup milk1/2 cup vegetable oil2 teaspoons vanilla extract1 cup boiling water But lets say I only had 1 cup of brown sugar, cup of chocolate chips and teaspoon of vanilla, plus all of the other ingredients. How good is my chocolate cake going to be? It might look OK, but chances are the person eating it is going to be surprised at the taste. You cant bake a cake or run the body without providing everything thats needed. By the same token, it is wise not to add ingredients for either the cake or the body that are not required. I dont think if I added two ounces of Oregano that it would help the cake taste any better. I still wonder why people feel a need to put tar, carcinogens, and nicotine (a poison) into the body thinking that in some way it helps them. The body is the most amazing chemical factory ever devised. The body produces energy, distributes the fuel required for functioning, neutralizes toxins and removes them from the body so that further contamination cannot take place. The sad part is that most people take all of this for granted. They seem to care less about the foods they eat, the liquids they drink and the junk they use to feed the body. They are clueless about how difficult it is for the heart to do its job every day. If your resting heart rate is 80 beats per minute, take that times 60 minutes in a hour, and that times 24 hours in a day and you have your heart beating 115,200 times every day! Through activity and exercise you can strengthen the heart and its resting rate will drop. Lets say you lower your resting heart rate to 72 beats per minute. Using the above calculations, your heart would only have to beat 103,680 times per day saving you 11,520 beats. I dont know how to calculate the energy savings of those 11 thousand beats but your body could definitely use that energy somewhere else — perhaps in the immune system to fight off that cold we talked about. Another system of the body that gets slammed quite regularly is the pancreas, which is the organ responsible for producing insulin. Insulin keeps the blood sugar levels in the blood stream within certain limits. A can of Coke has 39 grams of sugar in it and a can of Pepsi has 41 grams of sugar in it. If we understand that 4 grams equals one teaspoon, or that each soda has around 10 teaspoons of sugar, then we can understand the headline: One Soda a Day Increases Diabetes Risk 85 Percent. Most people are unaware that diabetes is the fifth deadliest disease in the US. We create that situation for ourselves and by ourselves. If a wart were to grow out of our big toe one quarter of an inch for every teaspoon of sugar we consumed, we would probably stop after drinking about one half a can. But because we experience no outward side effects we continue to do what we have always done. We talked about activity and exercise being able to help the heart, but that is not the only benefit. As we stress the cells of the body by working them, they become more efficient at producing energy. They move oxygen and nutrients into the cells with more ease and rid the cells of toxic waste. Of course, as our cellular efficiency becomes greater, our ability to ward off disease and sickness becomes greater. We sleep better at night, and have more serenity and less stress in our lives during the day. My hope is that while reading this article, some little ah-ha popped out — that something made sense on a gut (action level) and not just on a mental (agreement) level. The true key to living a long full disease-free life is prevention. I pray that you will do those things that will allow you to move into a healthy state of being. Remember, if you want to be healthy, do what other healthy people do. Michael McCright is a Holistic Health Practitioner, educator, coach, and motivational speaker. A Guide To Proper Hair and Scalp Conditioning

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Gregg Hall From short hair to long hair and curly hair, we all have our own personal style when it comes to the hair on our head. There are so many products out there on the market that it is hard to choose between each one. So many hair products claim that they prevent scalp damage, strengthen hair, and moisturize your scalp. How do you decide between all of the products? Which ones prevent damage and which ones don’t? Simply put, healthy hair begins with good hair and scalp conditioning. First off, you must develop a routine when conditioning your hair. You need to consider your hair type, cut and texture. Different hair requires different products to condition and style. Search for conditioners that are specific for your hair type. You can choose from leave-in conditioners, 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioners, conditioners that are for heavy conditioning, hot oil treatments and so forth. You can purchase shampoos and conditioners based on your hair color, whether you have frizzy hair, limp hair, etc. There are a multitude of choices. Keep in mind when purchasing these hair products that it is good to have a few that will serve different purposes. Have one for everyday use and conditioning and then purchase one for deep conditioning. Try to deep condition your hair at least once a week. Be sure to use conditioner every time you wash your hair to replace any moisture that is lost during washing. Once you have decided which shampoo and conditioner you are going to use, the next step is to select your styling tools. What type of hairbrush do you want to use? Different hairbrushes do different things. There are hairbrushes that cause extra shine and some that well help with curling your hair during blow-drying; there is even a brush to help with keeping your hair from being tangled. Do you want to blow dry your hair or let it dry naturally? Are you going to curl your hair with a curling iron, or do you want to straighten it? When brushing your hair, make sure you are careful not to pull your hair, as it will cause broken ends. Also, if possible, try to brush your hair 3 times a day to help distribute the natural oils in your hair evenly throughout the day. Another suggestion that not only helps increase blood flow, but also is a great way to relax, is to perform a scalp massage. It will increase the shine, softness and strength of your hair. Check with a massage therapist on the proper way to do a massage or get your hairdresser to explain how to do it. There are special oils on the market, which can be used specifically for scalp massages and will also help with moisturizing. In order to have a successful hair and scalp routine, you will need the right products. A beauty supply store will carry the proper shampoos and conditioners, correct hairbrushes and styling products to help promote the blood flow in the scalp. If you follow your routine, you will have a healthy scalp and hair for years to come. Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach, Florida. Kidney Beans Nutrition

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Stewart Hare Kidney beans originally come from Peru; the scientific name for kidney beans is Phaseolus vulgaris. Today kidney beans are used as a food source throughout the world as they are a good source of cheap protein; they are grown commercially in China, India, Brazil, Indonesia and the USA. The kidney bean is, kidney shaped, it is dark red in colour but there is also a white variety of kidney bean which is known as the cannelloni bean. Kidney beans have great health benefits, the high fibre content makes them great at lowering cholesterol, preventing constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diverticulosis and good at preventing a rapid rise in blood sugar levels which makes kidney beans an ideal for diabetics and hypoglycaemics. The fibre content coupled with the folate and magnesium content in kidney beans makes them great at preventing heart disease such as heart attack, strokes and peripheral vascular disease. Kidney beans have good iron content and are an excellent food for growing children, adolescents and menstruating women who tend to need a boost of iron in their diets. Kidney beans are an excellent source of protein and a healthier choice to meat or dairy products. Nutrients Calcium Folic acid Magnesium Molybdenum Phosphorus Protein Potassium Benefits Good source of potassium Good source of protein Lowers cholesterol High in fibre Digestive tract cleanser Promotes beneficial bacteria Drawbacks May cause wind Raw kidney beans can cause food poisoning Kidney beans contain purines, if you are suffering from a purine-related problems such as gout or kidney stones, it is best to avoid or limit kidney beans in your diet. Kids Need Switching On Not Turning Off

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Gina Marie My youngest son bless him is 9 years old, his writing/reading skills are, with a bit of help on my part, far more advanced than his years. He started reading the excellent ‘Secrets of Droon’ series of books by Tony Abbott about 4 years ago, closely followed by the legendary ‘Harry Potter’ adventures. At breakfast time whatever happens to lying on the table (newspapers, magazines even junk mail) are scrutinised with a passion …. then the questions begin. What does ***** mean? Why did Tony Blair say **********? Yes we’ve all been there! Obviously there are certain limitations to a 9 year old child’s conception of the world, but usually most of the questions are answered plainly and as honestly as possible. The dreaded end of term parents evening beckons and if the last one is anything to go by this is the probable scenario; Teacher - I think he could put more effort into his literacy lessons. Me - Carry on. Teacher - Your son seems to show a lack of interest in his reading and writing classes. Me - Carry on. Teacher - I was just thinking what we could do to address the problem. Me - My son reads, and writes his own stories for hours on end, there is no problem. Teacher - Maybe but he seems to find it hard at school. Me - I’ve seen the stuff he brings home from school and quite frankly it’s nearly all outdated rubbish! Teacher - I’m sorry you feel that way. Me - So am I but it’s true! Teacher - What would you suggest then? Me - I suggest that the faceless archaic bureaucrats supposedly running the education system drag themselves and the curriculum out of the dark ages. I know it’s not your fault and to a certain extent your hands are tied but honestly some of the subject matter bears little or no relevance to modern society. End of conversation, sound familiar! My sister in law - (Miss X for the purpose of this story) is an English teacher working in an inner city ‘Learning Centre’ (school). An idyllic job at a well to do all girls College, through her own choice, came to an end and on returning to her ‘roots’ decided to take on a more challenging role. The majority of the kids here have ethnic, mixed race or under privileged backgrounds and as such, rightly or wrongly, need an education tailored to their individual needs. Whether this should be funded by the taxpayer is a question I can not unfortunately answer, I have my own views naturally but lets stick to the plot! Miss X is involved mainly with kids who think that Shakespeare is the pub round the corner, Wuthering Heights is some naff song their mother plays endlessly and the only writing they do is usually confined to expletives and graffiti in public places. She soon realised that some of the kids didn’t even want to be in school, some of them put up with it but would rather be elsewhere and a handful actually enjoyed the experience and participated fully in her lessons. She listened to the kids, we’re talking 14 - 16 year olds here, and took on board their needs, comments, suggestions etc and after reading between the lines (and sometimes a barrage of ‘F’ words!) realised surprise surprise, most of them deep down were responsible, caring young adults, they just showed it in different ways. The most popular gripe held by the kids was, you’ve guessed it, the relevance or total lack of it regarding some of the subjects they were being force fed. The main reason half of them were bunking off every day! Childrens skills are many and diverse, I believe as individuals they should be nurtured accordingly. Unless they are studying for a degree or writing an essay/paper, young kids today don’t need Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde etc. Maybe the odd updated example to illustrate a point, but to the kids I’m talking about it’s all a foreign language. Many of the words, metaphors and similies have no use whatsoever in modern day vocabulary. My own feelings are that some of the so called ‘Classics’ are now history and should be placed in that category. Although her job at the school is still in it’s infancy Miss X has integrated more up to date authors/writers into her lessons, interest has grown and student participation has increased along with attendance levels. Nuff said. How long will it take for the aforementioned education chiefs to brush away the cobwebs and bring our schools into the 21st Century?Until such a time arises I will actively encourage my son, with a little supervision, to read anything and everything he chooses. The questions, even the awkward ones will still be answered honestly and hopefully his journey into young adulthood will not be a confusing, daunting or lonely experience. After years of dreaming and worshipping the written word gina has finally taken the plunge and has dived headlong into her own writing career. Having long been a believer in the Montessori school of teaching, she believes that children from an early age should have a greater input on their education. http://the-importance-of-words.blogspot.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Gina_Marie http://EzineArticles.com/?Kids-Need-Switching-On-Not-Turning-Off&id=400401 buy phentermine fedex phentermine overnight without a prescription buy phentermine with cod kenwood pharmacy phentermine

Junior Faculty Balancing Act: Teaching, Part I

Friday, September 21st, 2007

By Gina J Hiatt My website poll of 96 junior faculty members has an unequivocal winner. The poll asks, What is the hardest part about being a junior faculty member?Over a third of the respondents chose Teaching takes up so much time as their response. Exactly How Time Consuming is Teaching? Surveys of how professors spend their time indicate that professors as a group, from junior to full professors, spend 29-30 hours a week at a minimum on activities related to teaching. Obviously, new faculty, who tend to have a higher teaching load than do full professors, and who are often teaching classes that they have never taught before, probably spend more than 30 hours a week. At some colleges with more of a teaching emphasis, it has been estimated that new professors may spend 50-60 hours a week on teaching. What Can You Do To Lighten Your Teaching Burden? Robert Boice, the author of Advice to New Faculty Members, devotes the first 100 pages of his book to teaching. His advice can be boiled down to moderation in all things. When it comes to teaching, there are specific actions you can take. Here are some of his recommendations that I believe are the easiest to implement. 1. Dont try to fit too much into each class 2. You dont have to know everything 3. Simplify and make things more clear 4. Allow pauses during class 5. Do the hardest work before it seems like work Dont Try to Fit Too Much Into Each Class Many new professors make the mistake of equating quantity with quality. The truth is that it is easy to overwhelm and bore your students. Do you want them walking out of your class with pages of poor notes, not having taken in most of what youve said? Or do you want them to leave energized, excited, and clear about your most important points? You Dont Have to Know Everything Students are relieved and, ironically, will like and trust you more if they find out that youre NOT perfect. Studies show that students prefer hearing their professors reason things out. Showing the process of your thinking is excellent modeling. You dont earn their respect by being the smartest, most knowledgeable person in the world. You earn it by respecting them. If you dont know the answer to something, model a scholars attitude of curiosity. Compliment them on the excellent question, say youll look into it and that youll answer it in the next class. Simplify and Make Things More Clear The information is often already in the assigned readings. If classes function only as information dumps, students will be resentful. On the other hand, if you can simplify, clarify and help them see the information in a new way, you will be making the class time valuable to them. Do you notice how this interacts with the idea of not fitting too much into the class? In order to clarify and simplify, you cant complicate things by forcing too much information into their heads. Allow Pauses During Class Racing through the material will leave you and the class breathless. Its not only OK, its preferable to let there be some spaces where you collect your thoughts, find the next page of your notes, or ask if there are questions and allow a silence for students to digest the material. These pauses will allow you to gauge audience reaction and shape your subsequent remarks accordingly. Do The Hardest Work Before it Seems Like Work I used quotes because this concept is directly from Boyces book. As you go about your day, make notes of thoughts about future classes that crop up in your mind. Expand on those during little breaks of a few minutes in your day, making mini-outlines or taking notes on further thoughts. Continue to expand on these ideas, imagining student reactions, metaphors or examples you might use, questions you might ask, discussion points, etc. Thus you are not preparing in one painful session, but slowly building to a preparation that will be partly complete. My Recommendation I suggest that you choose at least one of these ideas to try out in your teaching preparation or in your classes this week. You might find the transition a little scary, but you also might find that it helps your teaching. What have you got to lose? Iridium Satellite Phone Service Covers The Globe

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Riley_Hendersen]Riley Hendersen Providing government, business and residential customers with the power of satellite driven communications, the Iridium satellite phone service is one of the industry leaders in using this technology. The company is noted as being the service provider for the United States Department of Defense, which happens to speak well for the advances that have been made in satellite communications technology over the past few decades. Rather than rely on giant dishes and impossible to use devices, companies like Iridium satellite phone service have managed to shrink the technology to more usable forms. The satellite phones in use today tend to operate and look more like regular land lines or even cell phones, but the power that backs them is much greater. The Iridium satellite phone company, for example, operates using about 66 low-earth orbiting satellites. These devices are cross-linked to provide as seamless of coverage as possible for customers that are quite broad ranging. Thanks to its massive satellite installation, Iridium is considered the owner of the biggest satellite constellation in the entire world. The company tends to cater to business and government clients, but its applications are also favored by many residential customers who live in out of the way places. As the Iridium system becomes more sound and reliable, more businesses and even residential customers are turning to this company to provide their voice and data transfer solutions. Industries that benefit from satellite phone service, include: Defense: When telephone lines go down, satellites don’t. This is the reason why government agencies such as the Department of Defense rely on companies like Iridium. It’s not a good idea for the defense department to lose contact with its key employees. Satellites help make sure this doesn’t happen. Shipping: Many maritime companies rely on satellite phones for their coverage areas and convenience. Not relying on cell towers to power them, these phones are ideal for shipping companies that have vessels traveling in and out of remote regions. Aviation: There aren’t landlines on airplanes, but there are satellite phones. These devices work above and beyond regular radio frequencies to keep passengers and pilots in touch with the ground. Whether it’s commercial aviation or government related, satellite phones are fast becoming the communication tool of choice. Transportation: We’ve all heard the horror stories about going through the mountains and losing cell phone service. Transportation companies that rely on satellite phone services, such as Iridium, do so to prevent this eventuality. When staying in constant touch is important, companies such as the Iridium satellite phone service are a good way to go. Emergency services: Agencies that provide emergency and humanitarian services in remote locations are turning to satellite phone service to ensure their worker have constant contact with each other and their home offices. Since satellite phones can offer virtual worldwide coverage, they provide a sound solution where the might be nothing else. As technology marches forward so too does the reliability and effectiveness of satellite technology. Powering communications for government and industry, the satellite phone services provided by companies like Iridium are become the way business gets done. Why you Should Try Online Dating

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

By Sean Morrissy While online dating has become more accepted in recent times, there is still a stigma associated with it. Maybe youre worried that if people know youre online, they will think you cant deal with women in real life? Well, that mightve been true a few years ago, but this is the 21st century! Thousands of beautiful women are flocking to online dating sites for reasons I will discuss another time. So, if dating lots of beautiful women means you are a nerd, so be it! You should not just confine yourself to online dating, instead use it as another avenue for meeting women. Think of a dating site as you would a nightclub or a bar. I know of some people who became hermits once they go online, only going out for dates that they have setup online. This is not the idea behind online dating. One of the positives of online dating nowadays is the number of quality women on the sites. If youre purely after attractive women, then a nightclub is a great place for it, but there are a lot of women who may be taken, are only after validation from guys, not to mention dealing with bitch shields. In my experience, the women on online dating sites seem to be more down to earth and more real. A friend of mine once described a nightclub as virtual reality and hes right. Of course, if you are a bit shy and the thought of approaching a woman in a nightclub seems worse than sticking a needle in your eye, then online dating can be a godsend. Once you master how to go about getting dates online, your confidence will skyrocket and going online can just be another one of your avenues for meeting women. If you are still unsure about whether online dating is for you, check out a few of the sites that are featured on this site. They are all fantastic and provide a great service. A one month membership at any of these sites is not going to set you back far, so remember, youll never ever know, if you never have a go. How to Lose One Pound a Year: BFJ Diet Follow-up

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By John T Jones, Ph.D. In my original article on the Big Fat John Plan for losing weight I told you that I would report back to you on how things are going. I said in that article that when I weight 187 pounds that my cardiologist told me that was where I should be for good cardiac health. Since then, my heart has added a spare part from a pig, an aortic valve. Here is my report: I went back on the Big Fat John Plan six weeks ago. I weighed 222 pounds at check-in. I now weigh 204 pounds. Using higher mathematics I calculate that I have lost 18 pounds or 3 pounds each week. In the current version of the Big Fat John Plan I printed out individual sheets, one for each week of the plan. At the top of each sheet is printed Big Fat John and Week of: I actually print the starting date of each week. For example: Big Fat John Week of: 5/14. I printed sheets for 12 weeks. I may have to print more later. Below the title, there is a table of 8 columns and 14 rows. That makes a cell about one inch wide and just over inch tall. There is a title row in the table. The first column says Food and the other seven are labeled Calories. The last seven columns are for the days of the week. I start with Sunday. The reason I use one column, the left column, labeled Food is that most days I eat some of the same foods and I dont have to write them down in the day cells. Each cell gets only one food and if all the cells are filled for a day, thats it. NO MORE FOOD! In the day cells I write the number of calories in the food item in that cell. If the food is not listed in the left column, I write down the name of the food too. I dont like to eat more than 1000-1200 calories each day. I lose weight when my caloric intake is in that range. I lose about 3 pounds a week. That is what I have lost in the first six week period of the current campaign. When I get to my target weight of 187 pounds I will taper off to about 1300 calories and check to see if Im holding weight or gaining again. In the current campaign I stopped recording after the second week was completed. Why? Because by the end of the second week I know what I need to do to stay on the diet and I dont need to write down what I know. However, the Chart goes up every Sunday Morning and I record my weight and the circumference of my huge stomach above the column. I record my weight two or three times a week. Let me modify my statement on not recording after the first two weeks. The chart is on the wall. If I find that Im not losing weight, I will immediately begin to record. Ive lost only one inch from my girth so far. It takes time to get things going. Im not sure where my weight loss is centered but my wife says that she can see the change. Well there is a change. Ive found that my feet are no longer swelling and my doctor will probably be able to take me off some medication. I also notice that when I walk one mile around the high school track near our home it is much easier on my legs. My pig valve keeps me pumping along at a 3 mile/hour clip. In other words, I walk one mile in 20 minutes as my cardiologist has instructed. Unfortunately, walking does not burn many calories. What it does do is this. It increases your metabolism. That is why it is so important to exercise every day. My clothes fit better too. Im just worried that new clothes that I have purchased will look baggy. Well, Ive got plenty of other clothes that I cant now get into. I no longer eat at night. If I really feel the pain I might eat an apple or a graham cracker with a teaspoon of peanut butter on it. If I drink milk or juices I usually take a half or quarter of a glass and Im just as satisfied as if I had a full glass. I say to my self. Ah! Ive had a big glass of milk and now Im going to finish it off. Such a dirty trick to play on myself. I stay away from eating bread more than once a day and most days I dont eat bread. I like eggs and have them several times a week. I never eat bread with the eggs. I say, cook more eggs if you need a bit more to eat. I never go over three eggs at a time. A two-egg omelette with just one thin slice of cheese satisfies me just as much as one of my three-egg, cheese filled, fluffed monsters. Protein is essential to losing weight without dying of hunger pains. I will occasionally have a small steak for breakfast with or without an egg or two. I like hotdogs. Ill eat a beef or turkey hotdog occasionally rather than a meal. Ive found that I dont need to eat two hotdogs. I eat vegetables fresh or from the can. I add a small amount of butter substitute (no trans-fats allowed) to make them palatable after they are cooked and drained. Occasionally, I will eat a salad or a piece of fish. I like crab meat and if I can get it at a good price, or get it at all in Idaho, I will use it to make a crab meat omelette. I cut back on the salt. Fruit is essential. I prefer fresh fruit to sugary fruit juices. In fact, I limit the amount of juice because you can drink a bundle of calories without even thinking about it. Fruit is a satisfying snack and will keep you from overeating. I can not diet and go though a week without eating normally. On Sunday we always go to my sons house and I ignore any consideration of calories. I only eat once that day and I eat what I want except for one thing. I make a cake for my grandkids every Sunday morning. I eat only a small sample piece of the cake of the day. Every week I also take my wife (and sometimes my son and his wife or a couple of the grandkids) out to dinner. We like to go to the Golden Coral because we can fill up on salads before we get to the good stuff. Sometimes I just stick to protein and fruit on these visits. I ignore calories for the main part but I stay away from the desert tables. My wife who once taught at Weight Watchers has dieted for many years. She likes to separate food groups. She will eat fruits on her “fruit day,” vegetables on her “vegetable day,” and protein on her “protein day.” Yesterday we went to the New China Buffet in Twin Falls. I ate two bowls of soup with a couple of Chinese dumplings added. Then I only had to go around one of the five or six tables once to be satisfied. I ate a couple of macaroons and a half scoop of ice cream for desert. That was all I ate all day. I had a warm feeling in my tummy for hours. If you decide to diet and you never binge, you will fail. Thats my opinion and Im sticking to it. The reason is this. If you go on a starvation diet and never “binge” your body will think that you are starving to death. It will shut down your metabolism and you will stop losing weight. If you “binge” a couple of times a week, your body will think that all is well. I saw on television that Marlene Dietrich only ate every three days. I guess that is one way to do it but that would not be for me. I’m not a snake. My program is to eat whatever you want but in small quantities. I try to stay away from fats. Most men can cut down to 1500 calories each day and lose weight. That is because they burn 2500 calories. For me, I guess I seldom burn over 1500 calories each day. Therefore I must drop my caloric intake lower to lose weight. What should your caloric intake be to lose weight? The only way I know is to experiment. While you are experimenting make sure you are getting the vitamins and minerals that you need. Take a multivitamin everyday. Occasionally substitute one of those discount diet drinks for a meal. They come in chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla and are available in most supermarkets and drugstores. If price is no object you can drink Insure or another brand name instead. The problem that must be overcome in dieting is discouragement. You will not lose the same amount of weight every week. You might even gain a pound. Dont worry about it. Just make sure you are on your regimen. The amount you lose every week will also taper off. So far, it has not for me but I know it will. Your body has a mind of its own and it will take action if you scare it into thinking you are starving. Thats why it is important to pig-out occasionally. Just remember when you are pigging out to stay away from too many sweets, fats, and carbohydrates. Need a shoulder to cry on? Send me an e-mail. Lets see! At my present rate of weight loss I should disappear by the end of September, 2007. John T. Friendship Albums

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Rachel Paxton My 12-year-old daughter was mad at me when I refused to pay $25 for a school yearbook last year. Who are they trying to kid? In an attempt to appease my daughter, I suggested buying a little notebook that her friends could write messages in for her. As it turned out, we found a small turquoise spiral-bound notebook for about $3 that she really liked. Her gel pens looked really great on the turquoise paper. I also agreed to let her take my camera to school on the last day (it’s a fairly inexpensive camera). She took a roll of film that was all hers to take pictures of her friends. She had her friend write little notes to her in her notebook, including phone numbers, AOL Instant Messenger screen names, whatever information they wanted to exchange. After we got the film developed, my daughter cut the faces of friends she wanted out of the photos and glued them into her notebook. Next she added notes next to each photo, including the person’s name and something about that person. The neat thing about those photos was the fact that they were all so candid. She got group photos of her friends, shots of all the boys she had crushes on throughout the year–everything she wanted to remember in years to come. The total cost of her little friendship album was about $10. The memories it contains are priceless. When I last asked her where her album was, she said a friend had borrowed it so she could scan all the pictures for herself! Originally published at Suite 101. General Depression Information: Understanding Depression Symptoms and Treatments

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Craig Wilcox The first thing to know about depression is that it is not just in your head. Depression is, in fact, a whole body disease that affects multiple systems. In addition to feeling sad, hopeless, or helpless, a person may suffer from extreme fatigue, decreased motor (muscle) coordination, changes in appetite and weight, and a loss of interest in activities that are usually pleasurable–just to name a few of the more common symptoms. Anxiety, which is commonly understood to consist of fear without any direct cause, is highly correlated with depression. Anxiety is an imbalance not just of brain chemicals, but of the entire nervous system, which is over-responding throughout the body as if a physical threat is impending. This can often cause the depressed person to feel very jittery, and some people experience extra clumsiness as they go about their day. Only a doctor can diagnose depression, and if you are suffering from what you believe to be depression, you should make an appointment immediately. (If you need help sooner, please dial 9-1-1.) When you speak to a doctor during a formal assessment, he/she will ask you questions like the following, which are adapted from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV: 1. Are you experiencing a depressed mood? 2. Have you lost interest in most or all of your normal activities, including normally pleasurable ones? 3. Have you experienced a dramatic change in your appetite, leading to noticeable weight gain or weight loss in the last month? 4. Have your sleep habits changed? Do you sleep much more or much less than normal, or do you have trouble getting to sleep or waking up? 5. Do you feel agitated or jumpy, or have others noticed that you are more irritable than normal? 6. Have you had trouble concentrating or thinking clearly? 7. Do you feel abnormally tired throughout the day? 8. Do you have overwhelming feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness that things wont improve? 9. Have you been thinking about death or suicide more than usual, or have you tried to commit suicide? If you answered yes to questions 1 and/or 2, plus any four of the other questions, and these symptoms have persisted for at least two weeks with little change, you may be suffering from clinical depression. Your doctor will also want to make sure that these symptoms are not due to what would be considered a normal reaction to a life situation, like a death in the family. It is completely normal to feel those things after a traumatic life event, unless those feelings persist for longer than two months without seeming to become easier to handle. Additionally, the doctor will want to know whether these symptoms are causing you great difficulty in completing your normal daily activities. Depression is serious enough that it can cause a person to miss work and be unable to fulfill family obligations. Risk Factors People who suffer from depression are much more likely to suffer from other life threatening diseases, including diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Much focus has been put on discovering why depressed patients are about four times as likely as their peers to suffer a heart attack within 14 years of their first depressive episode. Underscoring the whole body effect of depression is the research finding that depressed patients have lower heart rate variability (HRV) than normal. HRV is lowered when the parasympathetic branch of the nervous system is not fully functioning, and people with low HRH are at high risk for suffering heart attacks. The malfunctioning of the parasympathetic branch may be a key in understanding how mental perception of events that lead to depression affect the entire body. Causes of Depression Depression can be caused by any number of circumstances. For some, genetics may play a role (this is especially true for bipolar disorder, or manic depression, which is not covered in this article). For others, it could be the result of their life situation, such as an overly stressful stretch of time or a disease. Many times, depression can be caused by uncontrollable stress. In this case, a person is going through a negative event in which they perceive their efforts will not affect the outcome. Caregivers are especially prone to this. With the advent of disease such as Alzheimers, a patient may need constant attention from a family member for years, causing great disruption in the caregivers life. In cases of stress, it should be repeated that the effects will be on the whole body, not just the mind. Stress can cause the secretion of excess cortisol, which in turn can damage tissues in the brain and body. Stress hormones can also cause the nervous system to become overworked in trying to maintain balance, eventually causing it to shut down due to exhaustion. Depression Treatment Options Anti-Depressants One of the great advances in pharmaceutical medicine was the advent of the SSRI class of anti-depressants. Depression can cause an imbalance in the brain chemical called serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps us feel calm and relaxed with a sense of wellbeing. In people who are depressed, serotonin production may be lowered, or it may not be utilized most effectively in the brain. Neurotransmitters are secreted into the spaces between the brain cells. SSRIs, or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, prevent the serotonin from being absorbed back into brain cells as quickly, and brain researchers believe that leaving more of the serotonin in between the cells has a mood-enhancing effect. Examples of SSRI class anti-depressant drugs include Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil. They have been shown to be highly effective for alleviating depression and anxiety in a wide range of people, though their safety in children has recently been questioned. Counseling In addition to medication, patients are usually also referred to a counselor for what is often referred to as talk therapy, or more formally as cognitive behavior therapy. With this type of counseling, the depressed person learns to notice their negative thinking patterns and challenge them. Over time, patients are able to prevent negative moods by intervening in their own to reflect a more positive outlook. Exercise Research has shown that consistent aerobic exercise in a specific heart rate zone has very beneficial effects in fighting depression in both the short- and long-term. While it may be difficult for someone experiencing a major depressive episode to rally the energy necessary to exercise, most people who do experience at least some relief from depression within just 10 minutes of starting. Though not widely publicized, the effects of exercise have been repeatedly shown to result in decreases in depression that are on par with both drug and counseling therapies. For more information on an exercise program that may help alleviate depression symptoms, please go to www.hrh-for-depression.com. Herbal Therapies Interest in herbal therapies for depression has always been high, and in some countries, such as Germany, herbal therapies are preferred over medicinal therapies, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Many people prefer herbal therapies in general, because they believe the side effects of anti-depressants may affect them negatively. Herbs such as ginseng and gingko biloba have been used to treat depression, but the only herb to be tested in a large scale study is St. Johns wort. Patients who were followed for 26 weeks of St. Johns Wort use did experience a reduction in depression that was nearly comparable to sertraline, an SSRI. Researchers warned, however, that St. Johns wort may utilize the same metabolic pathways as other drugs for depression, heart disease, seizures, and some cancers. As a result, patients need to be certain to consult their doctors on the use of St. Johns wort with other medications. Getting Help Nearly 10% of Americans will experience a depressive illness in any given year. If you feel you are in the throes of depression, please understand that there are very effective treatments available to you. Modern SSRI medications, which are the most commonly prescribed anti-depressants, can start working within 2 weeks of taking the first dose. By engaging in some moderate exercise, you might even feel somewhat better by the end of today. Though doing anything while suffering from depression is difficult, please do make it a priority to seek some sort of help. If you need others to intervene on your behalf, please communicate that to them. If you are feeling depressed, chances are that people around you have noticed, but they may not want to say anything about it to you. With a small overture on your part, they will likely jump at the opportunity to help you seek treatment.
